Questions with a question word - Vraagwoordvragen

A lot of questions are formed by using a special question word. Four grammatical categories of these question words can be distinguished:

interrogative pronoun
interrogative adverb
interrogative numeral
inerrogative pronominal adverb

Question-word questions are constructed by starting the sentence with a question word. In this way they have the same word-order as a >declarative with inversion.

Interrogative pronouns:

wie - who(m)
Wie wil er mee naar het strand?
Who wants to come along to the beach?

wat - what

Wat zullen we eten?
What shall we eat?

welk(e) - which

Welke bus zullen we nemen? Welk boek zullen we lezen?
Which bus shall we take? Which book shall we read?

Note that welk precedes het -words, while welke precedes de -words (including plurals). In this way, welk(e) behaves like an >>adjective.

Interrogative adverbs:

waar - where

Waar gaan we naar toe?
Where are we going?

wanneer - when

Wanneer gaan we weg?
When are we leaving?

hoe - how

Hoe laat komen we weer thuis?
What time will we come home again?

Interrogative numeral:

hoeveel - how many

Hoeveel mensen gaan er mee?
How many people are coming along?

Interrogative pronominal adverbs:

Most question words can be used in conjunction with prepositions, in which case the preposition precedes the question word:

Met wie ga jij naar de bioscoop?
With whom do you go to the cinema?
Naar welke kroeg zullen we gaan?
Which pub shall we go to?
Voor hoeveel mensen moet ik koken?
How many people do I have to cook for?

However, wat is not normally combined with a preposition. Instead, Dutch uses a combination of the adverb waar followed by the preposition. This combination is called interrogative pronominal adverb. Interrogative pronominal adverbs can be made up with almost any preposition. Here are two common examples:

waarin - in which / what

Waarin zal ik mijn handdoek stoppen?
What shall I put my towel in?

waamee - with what

Waarmee kan ik dit het beste schoonmaken?
With what do I best clean this?

A special feature of pronominal adverbs is that they can be split up with the preposition occurring towards the end of the clause:

Waar zal ik mijn handdoek in stoppen?
Waar kan ik dit het beste rmee schoonmaken?
