wat - what
welk(e) - which
Note that welk precedes het -words, while welke precedes de -words (including plurals). In this way, welk(e) behaves like an >>adjective. waar - where
wanneer - when
hoe - how
hoeveel - how many
Interrogative pronominal adverbs: Most question words can be used in conjunction with prepositions, in which case the preposition precedes the question word:
However, wat is not normally combined with a preposition. Instead, Dutch uses a combination of the adverb waar followed by the preposition. This combination is called interrogative pronominal adverb. Interrogative pronominal adverbs can be made up with almost any preposition. Here are two common examples: waarin - in which / what
waamee - with what
A special feature of pronominal adverbs is that they can be split up with the preposition occurring towards the end of the clause:
