Conjunctional adverbs - Voegwoordelijke bijwoorden

Conjunctional adverbs are >>adverbs in form (grammatically), but conjunctions in function (semantically). >Their position in a clause is that of an adverb, so they form an integral part of a sentence, whereas conjunctions can be said to be more peripheral to the clause as syntactic unit. But like conjunctions, conjunctional adverbs link language elements together. They are useful to create >>cohesion at the level of the text, where conjunctions do so rather at the level of the clause or sentence.

The most common conjunctional adverbs of Dutch are:

>aan de ene kant ... aan de andere kant ... on the one hand ... on the other hand >althans at least
>bovendien moreover >daardoor as a result
>daarentegen on the other hand >daarom therefore
>desalniettemin however >dus therefore
>echter however >enerzijds ... anderzijds ... on the one hand ... on the other hand
>immers after all >nochtans however
>ook also, too >overigens by the way, besides
>ten eerste, ten tweede (..), ten slotte firstly, secondly (...), finally >tenslotte after all
>tevens also >toch still, nevertheless
>trouwens by the way, besides >wel (added stress)
>zelfs even
