Constituents - Zinsdelen

Introduction

When talking about grammar, it is important to know the correct terms for the elements in the sentence. It is possible to look at grammar on different levels. This section identifies and discusses the functions certain elements fulfil in a sentence. When we conduct this type of analysis, we look at the constituents of the text.

The section on >>parts of speech discusses individual words and word classes.

The following constituents are distinguished:

>subject
>predicate
>object
>adjunct

Broadly speaking, a sentence describes a situation or an activity. Sometimes this is also called a state-of -affairs. The predicate of a sentence contains the verb(s) and therefore describes the type of activity of situation. The subject can be seen as the main player in the state-of-affairs: it carries out the activity described by the verb or is the focus of the situation. Objects play a secondary role in the state-of-affaris: they undergo the action carried out by the subject. Adjuncts give additional information. This may be additional information about the subject of the sentence, about an object, or about an entire state-of-affairs.

Take a look at the following sentence:

Scholengemeenschap Het Assink in Neede gaat de namen van pesters op een bord in de hal bekendmaken. The secondary school Het Assink in Neede is going to publish the names of bullies on a board in the hall.

    - The subject, or the main actor in this sentence, is Scholengemeenschap Het Assink in Neede.
    - The object, or the recipient of the action, is de namen van pesters.
    - The predicate is gaat bekendmaken, it describes wat the secondary school is going to do with the names of bullies.
    - Additional information about the state-of-affairs is provided by op een bord in de hal. It is an adjunct.
