Middle field
As the name suggests, the middle field is the part in the middle of a clause.
In a main clause it is wedged in between the two elements of the verbal bracket. The verbal bracket consists of a position towards the front of the clause for the >finite verb and a position towards the back of the clause for all >non-finite verbal elements.

In a subordinate clause the middle field is wedged in between the >>subordinating conjunction and the >verbal cluster.

The middle field contains all non-verbal elements that do not occur in first position (in main clauses; in subordinate clauses nothing can precede the conjunction) or final position.
This can be:
- the >>subject in yes/no questions and in declarative sentences with inversion:
| Heeft Barack Obama de presidentsverkiezingen in de Verenigde Staten gewonnen? |
| Op 4 november 2008 heeft Barack Obama de presidentsverkiezingen in de Verenigde Staten gewonnen. |
Note: In subordinate clauses the subject always occurs in the middle field.
| (Het was groot feest in Amerika,) toen Barack Obama de presidentsverkiezingen had gewonnen. |
| (Je mag niet naar de tv kijken,) omdat je een brief moet schrijven aan je tante. |
- the >>direct and >>indirect object:
| Mijn moeder wil dat ik mijn tante een brief stuur,
maar ik heb haar een email gestuurd. |

Note: Adjuncts can occur in between the subject and the objects in the middle field:
| Ik heb gisteren mijn broer eindelijk die dvd weer eens teruggegeven. |
Note: Adjuncts may occasionally occur before the subject in the middle field:
| In onze straat is gisteren een ernstig ongeluk gebeurd. |
