Daardoor - As a result

The conjunctional adverb daardoor presents a cause:

During the building work there was a continuous draught in the kitchen. As a result, their beloved canary caught a cold and died.

Daardoor is often confused with the conjunctional adverb daarom. There is a distinction between the two:

  • daarom should be used to express a reason, when the clause following it requires an element of human intervention.
  • daardoor should be used to express a cause, when an element of human intervention is absent from the clause following it.

Compare the example above with:

During the building work there was a continuous draught in the kitchen. Therefore he had moved their beloved canary to the study.
