Distance of the antecedent

When using pronouns to refer back, it is important not to refer too far back. If you do that, the reader may lose track of what you are referring to. Here is an example of referring too far back in a piece on the Cobra movement written by a learner of Dutch:

De naam van deze kunstbeweging is samengesteld uit de beginletters van de drie hoofdsteden van Denemarken, België en Nederland: Copenhagen, Brussel en Amsterdam. Als men de naam Cobra in ogenschouw neemt, denkt men instinctief aan de cobraslang (…). Er waren ook kunstenaars die uit andere noordeuropese landen als Duitsland, Engeland, IJsland en Zweden kwamen. In deze steden bevonden zich de meest progressieve Cobrakunstenaars: (..)

The name of this art movement is composed of the first letters of the three capitals of Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands: Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. If one considers the name Cobra, one thinks instinctively of the snake (..). There were also artists from other Northern European countries like Germany, England, Iceland and Sweden.
