If als expresses a conditional relation, it can be replaced by indien. If the condition is negative, tenzij can be used.
or it can express a relation of time:
Ik ga in bad als ik thuiskom van voetbal. |
| I take a bath when I come home from football. |
If als expresses a temporal relation, it can be replaced by wanneer:
Ik ga in bad wanneer ik thuiskom van voetbal. |
Als is used when the two events described more or less coincide, or the event in the main clause follows immediately on the event in the subordinate clause. In the above example the speaker comes home and next takes a bath. Als is used with the present tense or with future aspect.
When referring to the past, the Dutch equivalent of 'when' is toen.
Als is also used when describing a habit.
Ik ga altijd in bad wanneer ik thuiskom van voetbal. |
| I take a bath whenever I come home from football. |
In this habitual meaning als can also be used with reference to the past:
Vroeger ging ik altijd in bad als ik thuiskwam van voetbal. |
| I always used take a bath whenever I came home from football. |
