Doordat - Because

The subordinating conjunction doordat expresses reason or causality and is used when the effect is an automatic result of the cause:

De brug stortte in doordat de rivier buiten haar oevers trad.

The bridge collapsed because the river burst its banks.


Doordat jij het raam open hebt laten staan, is mijn papegaai weggevlogen.

Because you left the window open, my parrot has flown away.


This is slightly different from the causal conjunction omdat, which is used when a decision or a desire is involved in the reasoning:

Vanavond haal ik een pizza omdat ik geen zin heb om te koken.

Tonight I'll get a pizza becasue I do not fancy cooking.


Ik ben niet naar Galicië gegaan omdat het er altijd regent.

I did not go to Galicia because it always rains there.
