Predicate - Gezegde

The predicate describes the action of the clause. A predicate always contains one >finite verb (persoonsvorm), and may also contain other verbal elements like one or more infinitives, a past participle, or the prefix of a separable verb. A predicate that only consists of verbal elements is called a >verbal predicate (werkwoordelijk gezegde).

A predicate sometimes also contains a nominal part, like a noun or an adjective. In that case, we talk about a >nominal predicate (naamwoordelijk gezegde). The nominal part of a nominal predicate gives information about the subject of the clause.

An important aspect of the predicate in Dutch is the position of all the verbs in a clause. For this we differentiate between >main clauses and >subordinate clauses.
