Subordinating conjunctions - Onderschikkende voegwoorden

These connectives link elements of different levels: they link a main clause with a subordinate clause, or a subordinate clause with a subordinate clause of a lower level.

It is very important to know which connectives are subordinating conjunctions, because of the >>word order in a subordinate clause introduced by a subordinating conjunction.

The most common subordinating conjunctions are:

>aangezien because >al although
>alhoewel although >als when / if
>alvorens before >daar because
>dat that >doordat because
>hoe ... hoe/des te ... + comparative the more ... the more ... >hoewel although
>indien if >na after
>naarmate/naargelang as >nadat after
>of whether/if >ofschoon although
>om (in order) to >omdat because
>sinds since >tenzij unless
>terwijl while >toen when (in the past)
>voordat before >wanneer when
>zodat so that >zodra as soon as
