Checklist Dutch literature
in English translation

What is in this Checklist?

The checklist contains English translations, published up to the year 2000, of literary works (in the broad sense) originally written in Dutch. It covers a range of authors and genres from the medieval period up the end of the twentieth century. The emphasis is on literature. Other work has been included only incidentally.

The search engine supports keyword as well as full-text searching throughout the checklist, plus the facility to limit searches to specified date ranges. Clicking on ‘Continue’ in the far-right column of an entry will reveal all the fields for that entry.

Important note

• For work originally published in Dutch after 1800, only book-length volumes have been entered.
• Work originally published in Dutch before 1800 can be searched for titles of individual parts (such as individual poems) as well as book titles, both in Dutch and in English translation. In the case of individual parts (such as poems), you can search on both titles and first lines.
• Example: For an author like Louis Couperus (1863–1923), only book titles in Dutch and in English translation will have been entered. An author like Vondel (1587–1679) can be searched both for titles of collections and full-length plays and for titles of individual poems and first lines of poems (in both Dutch and English).

Some typographical conventions used in the Checklist

An oblique stroke ( / ) indicates a translation issued by more than one publisher. For example, London/New York followed by J. M. Dent & Co. / E. P. Dutton & Co. is shorthand for: London: J. M. Dent & Co., and New York: E. P. Dutton & Co. Later editions of the same translation are separated by commas: e. g. ‘1921, 1923’ means ‘first published in 1921, second edition in 1923’.

Other bibliographies

• The Babel Guide to Dutch and Flemish Fiction in English Translation, edited by Theo Hermans (Oxford: Boulevard Books, 2001; ISBN 1-899460-80-2), contains a database of translations as well as brief reviews of 115 English translations of modern Dutch and Flemish fiction.
• An ongoing bibliography of English translations of Dutch literary and other works appears in the yearbook The Low Countries, published by the Foundation Ons Erfdeel. Current information about English translations of Dutch literature may be obtained from the Foundation for the Production and Translation of Dutch Literature (Nederlandse Literair Productie- en Vertalingenfonds) and the Flemish Literature Fund (Vlaams Fonds voor de Letteren).
• The Dutch section of the Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Vienna hosts a bibliography of German translations of Dutch literature.
