Welcome to the distance-education degree programmes of Virtual Dutch!
Virtual Dutch is a teaching and learning initiative pooling the resources in Dutch studies of four British universities. From September 2010 Virtual Dutch offers two fully online postgraduate qualifications: a Certificate in Dutch Cultural Studies and a Diploma in Dutch Cultural Studies. Both qualifications are formally recognised by University College London (UCL). The programmes offer unique opportunities to study the modern society of the Netherlands and Flanders. Course topics, which are taught by regular academic staff from UCL and the University of Sheffield, range from in-depth study of Dutch and Flemish culture to project management and language learning at different levels. Both programmes can be taken on a full-time, part-time or flexible basis. The Certificate involves a total of around 600 study hours, the equivalent of 24 ETCS (60 credits). The Diploma involves approximately 1200 study hours in total, the equivalent of 48 ECTS (120 credits). Students who have obtained the Certificate can continue to the Diploma. From September 2011 students who have obtained either the Certificate or the Diploma will be able to continue to a full MA in Dutch Cultural Studies by distance learning. The four universities collaborating in Virtual Dutch are University College London (UCL) and the universities of Sheffield, Nottingham and Cambridge. The resources available to Virtual Dutch include multimedia self-study packs and online reference grammars complete with self-correcting exercises, as well as searchable bibliographies and language learning materials.
