Description

The Postgraduate Certificate in Dutch Cultural Studies, which is taught entirely online as a distance learning programme, offers a unique opportunity to study the modern society of the Netherlands and Flanders.

The programme is taught in English. It is available to students without previous knowledge of Dutch as well as to those already proficient in the language. Learning Dutch, or improving your command of it, is possible as part of the programme.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Dutch Cultural Studies is offered as part of Virtual Dutch, a consortium of four British universities aiming to promote Dutch studies through online learning and teaching. Teaching staff are drawn from the two major centres of Dutch studies in the United Kingdom: the Department of Dutch at University College London (UCL) and theDepartment of Germanic Studies at the University of Sheffield.

The programme is taken on a part-time basis. It starts at the end of September and ends in June of the following year.

Who is the Certificate for?

The programme aims to attract suitably qualified students who:

- wish to develop research and analytical skills and upgrade their qualification;
- have an interest in Dutch and Flemish society and culture;
- are looking for an intellectual challenge;
- enjoy distance learning 

Eligibility

To be admitted to the Certificate you need a good first degree (BA or equivalent), preferably in a humanities or social science subject, or relevant professional experience. Curriculum

The following courses make up the Postgraduate Certificate:

Core Course: Identity and Belonging in the Low Countries (20 credits)
Identities in Transnational Contexts (20 credits)
Project in Dutch Cultural Studies (20 credits)
Business Dutch Reading Skills Course (40 credits)
Hogelands Advanced Language Course (40 credits)

Structure

The programme consists of courses worth a total of 60 credits. Courses are either 20 or 40 credits. 
All students take the Core Course (20 credits). The remaining courses are selected from a list of options to reflect your individual interests as well your level of proficiency in Dutch.


Pathways through the Certificate

Several pathways through the programme are possible, depending on your level of proficiency in Dutch:

If you do not have previous knowledge of Dutch you can select courses as follows:
1. Core Course (20 credits)
2. Either Business Dutch (40 credits)
Or Identities in Transnational Contexts (20 credits) and Project in Dutch Cultural Studies (20 credits)
Total: 60 credits

If you have some previous knowledge of Dutch you can select courses as follows:
1. Core Course (20 credits)
2. Either Hogelands Advanced Dutch Language Course (40 credits)
Or Identities in Transnational Contexts (20 credits) and Project in Dutch Cultural Studies (20 credits)
Total: 60 credits

If you have a good previous knowledge of Dutch you select courses as follows:
1. Core Course (20 credits)
2. Identities in Transnational Contexts (20 credits)
3. Project in Dutch Cultural Studies (20 credits)
Total: 60 credits


Fees and Funding

The fees for the Postgraduate Certificate in Dutch Cultural Studies in the 2010-11 session are as follows:

UK/EU: £1705 full-time; £855 part-time (2010/11)
Overseas: £4,740 full-time; £2,435 part-time (2010/11)

The UCL Department of Dutch is offering two scholarships covering part of the fees for new students for the 2010-11 session.

Further Perspectives

Successful completion of the Postgraduate Certificate in Dutch Cultural Studies entitles you to carry the abbreviation PgCert (Hum) (UCL) behind your name.
There is more. The Postgraduate Certificate is part of a new and larger programme which will comprise a Postgraduate Diploma in Dutch Cultural Studies (from September 2010 onwards) and a fully-fledged MA in Dutch Cultural Studies (from September 2011 onwards). The Certificate comprises 60 credits, the Diploma 120 credits, the MA 180 credits.
When you have completed the Certificate you can, if you wish, continue with the Diploma and afterwards the MA. The credits you have accumulated in the Certificate will count towards the Diploma and the MA.
