Technical Requirements
Minimum Computer Specifications
These correspond to a typical computer that would have been purchased a few years ago. If you need to buy a PC, we suggest buying a machine with, at least a 3.0GHz processor, 1GB RAM, a DVD-ROM or combi drive, 100+GB hard disk drive, 17" LCD screen and all the other common items. We advise you to use a Windows-based PC, but many students (successfully) use computers with other operating systems. You will also need a Webcam, microphone and headset for the online tutorials.
Web browsers and internet access
Course websites have not been tested on all the web browsers that are available. The websites are tested on the two most recent versions of Internet Explorer (version 6 and 7) and Firefox (version 2 and 3). Internet access through broadband is advisable. Some of the course websites have interactive sessions using Flash player and these may be slow to launch if you have a dial-up connection. All courses require the use of PC-based video conferencing. You will need a properly installed web cam and microphone. More information you find in the individual course descriptions.
Other operating systems
Many students successfully use systems such as the Apple Mac or Linux. If you want to use a system other than a Windows-based PC, you may have problems accessing the software and data files supplied with course materials. We cannot offer technical support for other operating systems. Online course content is currently tested with Internet Explorer (versions 6 and 7) and Mozilla Firefox (versions 2 and 3).
Tutor-marked assignment can be submitted in a range of formats. Students who do not use Microsoft Word should submit their work in a platform-independent format, such as rich text format (RTF).
