Identity and Belonging in the Low Countries
Description: The module looks into questions of identity and community in both the Netherlands and Belgium, with an emphasis on the contemporary period. Four different topics are covered: the media landscape in Flanders and the Netherlands; collective memory and commemorative culture; gender issues and new belongings; language, ethnicity and religion in the Netherlands. The first topic incorporates a study skills element which pays particular attention to the academic writing and bibliographical conventions to be oserved in the rest of the programme. The course is taught jointly by staff from UCL and the University of Sheffield. It involves active learning: you are introduced to a topic, read up on it, participate in online discussion and produce a short assignment tackling a particular problem, all in the space of about three weeks. You then move on to the next topic. Learning outcomes: At the end of the course you will have acquired insight into Dutch and Flemish society and culture; the ability to understand and apply cultural analysis concepts; the ability to retrieve and process information critically and efficiently; and presentation and communication skills. Module code: DUTCGD01. Value: 30 credits (12 ECTS). Delivery: term I, by means of UCL's Virtual Learning Platform Moodle and desktop videoconferencing software.
