Identities in Transnational Contexts
Description: The course considers issues of identity in the Netherlands and Belgium in a wider context which transcends national and other borders and covers topics like: (1) the current debates about multiculturalism and immigration in the Netherlands; (2) the multilingual and multi-ethnic nature of Brussels; (3) the business culture and corporate governance of Dutch multinational companies; (4) issues of presentation and self-presentation in an intercultural context. The course is taught jointly by staff from UCL and the University of Sheffield, and involves active learning: you are introduced to a topic, read up on it, participate in online discussion and produce a short assignment tackling a particular problem, all in the space of a few weeks. You then move on to the next topic. Learning outcomes: At the end of the course you will have gained insight into contemporary Dutch and Flemish society and culture; the ability to understand and apply cultural analysis concepts; the ability to retrieve and critically process information at some speed; presentation and communication skills. Module code: DUTCGD02. Value: 30 credits (12 ECTS). Delivery: Term II, by means of UCL's Virtual Learning Platform Moodle and desktop videoconferening sessions. Tutor: Gerdi Quist. Individual topics are taught by Jet Louwerse, Ulrich Tiedau and Christine Sas. Assessment: four assignments totalling approximately 5,000 words.
