Hogelands Advanced Dutch Language Course
Description: This is a tutor-supported online course for advanced learners of Dutch. It is ideal for students who have completed Lagelands or reached a similar standard, roughly equivalent to level A2 as defined by the Council of Europe. The course, which is taught in Dutch and in English, is built around ten thematic lessons, each with a different theme, ranging from science and education to the Dutch multicultural society and the Golden Age. Each lesson includes reading and listening texts, with grammatical and other commentary. All text and audio material is authentic. The online activities and tasks are designed to develop the four language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. They also foster ICT and communication skills. Some comprehension and writing exercises are self-scoring and self-correcting, but the majority you need to email to the tutor for feedback. Regular videoconferencing sessions between you, your tutor and fellow students allow you to practise your listening and speaking skills and to interact directly with your fellow students around the globe. The course links to an online reference grammar of Dutch, which provides additional self-access exercise materials. Learning outcomes: At the end of the course you will have reached an advanced level of proficiency in Dutch: you will be able to communicate both orally and written in a wide range of contexts and situations; to express your opinions; to report what other people have said; to make structured notes; and to write different types of text. You will also have acquired insight into language structure and good self-study skills. Prerequisites: You need internet access and a computer and webcam as described in our Computer Specifications section. The only printed book you need is a translating dictionary (Dutch-English, English-Dutch). Value (Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma students only: 30 credits (12 ECTS). Delivery: term I and II. The course is delivered by means of a web environment and webcam-type tutorials. Tutor: An Vanderhelst. She will help you with the course materials and provides feedback on your written and oral work. You can also ask her for advice and guidance.
