General Module

In the General Module of this course you will practise your reading skills in modern Dutch. The level of Dutch required to start this Module is that of 'Het Profiel Toeristische en Informele Taalvaardigheid' (comparable with level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference; click here for more information).

This Module consists of twenty Units or lessons. Every Unit is organised around a text fragment. You will first read a short introduction on the topic of the text and the website from which it is borrowed. Note that you will be reading texts borrowed from various online sources and covering a wide range of economic and business topics (you find the (Dutch) titles of the Units in the banner at the right). Next you will analyse the text fragments through various self-correcting tasks and exercises on the vocabulary, grammar and syntax, and content. Detailed instructions, explanations and feedback are given for all exercises and tasks.

The text fragments and tasks become gradually more difficult; by Unit 20 you will attain the level required to start the Specialist Module. The instructions and feedback are in English from Units 1 to 15; from Unit 16 onwards the Units are entirely bilingual.

Every five Units there are so-called Test Sessions. These are designed to test how much you have learned in the previous Units. In these Sessions you are asked to complete a series of self-correcting, interactive tests on the vocabulary, grammar and syntax discussed in the previous five Units. You will be given a score after each exercise; if you do well, you are ready to tackle the next five Units.

In the Glossary you find Dutch explanations and English translations of all the vocabulary of the text fragments in the General Module. The Index of Grammar and Syntax Terms contains short explanations in English of all terminology of Dutch grammar and syntax encountered in the Units. On each Unit page you will find links to other useful resources for this course that are offered by the Virtual Department of Dutch.
