Welcome to this freely accessible Online Reading Course in Early Modern Dutch! This self-study course is designed to teach reading skills in sixteenth and seventeenth-century Dutch.

The course is primarily aimed at English-speaking university students and researchers who already have a beginner's knowledge of Modern Dutch and who want to learn to read Early Modern Dutch texts. Native speakers of Dutch who have little acquaintance with the language of the sixteenth and seventeenth century may be interested in the second part of the course which is entirely in Dutch and specifically aimed at developing reading skills in Dutch texts from the period.

In the first part of the course, the so-called General Module, which assumes a beginners' level of modern Dutch from the learners, you will be reading modernised texts from the period. You will practise your reading skills through various interactive and self-correcting tasks and exercises on Dutch vocabulary, grammar and syntax, and content.

The second part of the course consists of three so-called Specialist Modules. In these Modules, which are entirely in Dutch, you will learn to read texts in the original language. The first of the three Specialist Modules, which have a similar structure, covers historical texts from the period. The second module deals with sixteenth and seventeenth-century texts on art, and the third covers original texts that are important for the history of Early Modern Dutch culture. You will be asked to choose the module(s) which is/are most closely associated with your own specialist subject. You will again practise your reading through various interactive and self-correcting tasks on the original spelling, early modern grammar and syntax, and vocabulary.

 Good luck!
