In the General Module of this course you will practise your reading skills in modern Dutch. The course is aimed at university students and researchers who have a beginner's knowledge of modern Dutch and an interest in the (general) history, art history and cultural history of the Early Modern Netherlands. The level of Dutch required for the course is that of 'Het Profiel Toeristische en Informele Taalvaardigheid' (comparable with level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference; click here for more information).

This Module consists of twenty Units or lessons. Every Unit is organised around a text fragment. You will first read a short introduction on the background of the work from which the text is borrowed. Note that you will be reading modernised but otherwise un-adapted texts from the period covering a wide range of topics and genres (the titles you find in the left banner). Next you will analyse the text fragments through various self-correcting tasks and exercises on the vocabulary, grammar and syntax, and content. Detailed instructions, explanations and feedback are given for all exercises and tasks.

The text fragments and tasks become gradually more difficult; by Unit 20 you will attain the level required to start reading texts in the original language in the Specialist Modules. The instructions and feedback are in English from Units 1 to 15; from Unit 16 onwards the Units are entirely bilingual.

Every five Units there are so-called Revision and Test Sessions. These two Sessions are designed to test how much you have learned in the previous Units. In the Revision Session you will analyse a text fragment of a similar level as the texts you have been reading in the previous five Units. In the Test Session you will be asked to complete a series of self-correcting, interactive tests on the vocabulary, grammar and syntax discussed in the previous five Units. You will be given a score after each exercise; if you do well, you are ready to tackle the next five Units.

In the Glossary Modern Dutch you find Dutch explanations and English translations of all the vocabulary of the text fragments in the General Module. The Glossary of Grammar and Syntax Terms contains short explanations in English of all terminology of Dutch grammar and syntax encountered in the Units.
