Introduction to the Text

 

In this second Revision you will be asked to complete a similar set of tasks as in Units 6 to 10. The aims of the Revision and Test Sessions are to test how much you have learnt in the previous five Units. If you encounter difficulties with the tasks, you will probably need to review Units 6 to 10 before continuing with the next five Units. If you do well in Revision and Test Session 2, you are ready to tackle Units 11 to 15.

Note that little new grammar and syntax will be discussed here and that for that reason a similar text fragment as the one discussed in Unit 10 has been selected. In the modernised and adapted fragment from Koelman’s De vruchteloose bid-dagen van Nederlandt that you will reading here, he laments the way in which the holy baptism is administered.

Het is oneerbiedig tegenover de Heer Jezus wanneer de Sacramenten op onheilige wijze gebruikt en uitgedeeld worden. Op die manier wordt Christus in onze Kerken onteerd. Want het heilige doopsel wordt vaak slordig en terloops uitgedeeld en ontvangen. In sommige plaatsen is de Vader niet eens bij het doopsel aanwezig en worden er geen beloften afgelegd over de opvoeding van de kinderen. Daarnaast wordt iedereen die zich aanbiedt, gedoopt, zelfs de kinderen van papisten. Ik verneem ook dat men allerlei getuigen zou aanvaarden, hoewel deze vaak nog goddelozer dan de ouders zijn.
